Preparation for selective entry and scholarship exams.

Over the years, so many parents have asked me, “When is the right time to prepare for a scholarship or selective entrance exam?”

These are competitive, great opportunities that set children to be on a boosted path to success. To make sure their child has the best chance for success, these parents are looking for a timeline to achieve their goals.

Personally, I started preparing for the exam in year 5, I understood the process early and worked every week to hit my goals.

On the other hand, I have trained students who were 6-12 months away from the exam.

Did we all make it to the list?

To understand exam success, let’s have a look at what the exam tests. Both scholarship and selective entrance exams evaluate a student’s innate potential to comprehend written texts and number patterns.

Are these concepts taught at school? No.

To succeed you need to hone your exam taking skills and reasoning abilities.

At a year 5 level, you have this incredible opportunity to lay foundations for maths concepts and understand new vocabulary in a relaxing environment.

Not only are you focused on building a deep understanding of concepts, you are also looking to lock in this content knowledge and consolidate gaps in your learning.

Undoubtedly, you have a head-start towards your final goal. Whilst your competition is still learning the school curriculum.

Every student I talk to who begins the process tells me that if they had an additional 6 months to get ahead of school, to start seeing the goal, or to start preparing for their exams have said that they would snatch it out of my hands in a blink of an eye.

Moral of the story? Be the early bird. It doesn’t hurt to get ahead, but it can sting to fall behind.
