Do group classes mean you still have to be the tutor at home?

Yesterday I was speaking to a parent about helping his Year 6 daughter prepare for the Selective Entry Exams. There were many issues the pair were facing when they came to me, and one of them was the tuition centre they were attending, which shall not be named, had classes that were too big.

In group tutoring, there is:

  • Less time for individual attention.
  • Less time for individual feedback.
  • The parents end up having to take up the role to tutor their own children at home.

And then you find paying for tuition is useless.

But are group classes really the issue here?

The reason why group classes fail is not because of the size itself.

Research shows that students learn better when they can talk through their ideas, engage with opposing views, get answers to questions they wouldn’t have thought of, build a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition, and solve problems collaboratively.

(I could keep going, but you get the drift.)

The reason why it fails is the facilitator.

Classroom facilitators need more than just content knowledge or knowing how to explain concepts well.

A good educator needs to know how to facilitate a group of students through a series of tasks using collaboration.

They should delicately balance teaching as an expert, and letting the learners… well, learn.

Sadly, many ‘tutors’ lack these skills.

If, like the parent in this story, you are struggling because you are paying for a tutoring service, and yet you still have to take time out to teach your own kid, know… there is a better way!

I’m Chris, former Head of Maths at Suzanne Cory. I now help students with all the secrets into beating the Selective Exams.

I call it the High Impact Learning Method.

I’ve implemented the best research-based methods that I used to train top teachers and educators from Selective Schools.

And packed all the best bits into an amazing learning program which is guaranteed to level up your child’s learning without needing you to lift a finger. Reach out and find out how you can stop paying for tuition lessons and yet still be the tutor at home.
