Nossal High School is consistently ranked as one of Victoria’s best, and it’s no wonder why. Students are moulded in the image of the school’s namesake, Sir Gustav Nossal, who was not only a towering intellect but also a passionate advocate for public health initiatives. By contextualising academic excellence within community service, Nossal turns its students into much-needed leaders.
Nossal High School enrols a little over 200 Year 9 students every year, and based on vacancies, limited offers are made for Year 10 and 11 students.
To help our students earn these highly coveted offers, our classes provide extensive exam preparation, let them sit multiple practice Nossal selective entry tests, coach them through interview training and encourage them to engage in extracurriculars that build their physical and ethical fortitude.
Eligibility criteria for Nossal High School
There are three major criteria for eligibility. Some parents are surprised to learn that their child’s existing grades aren’t one of the criteria; while Nossal’s evaluators may consider grades, they assign much more value to exam results and extracurricular activities.
Citizenship and residency
Nossal High School students must be Australian or New Zealand citizens. It will also admit students with an ImmiCard or Visa that exempts them from international student fees.
Year level and extracurriculars
Nossal primarily admits Year 9 students, with Year 10 and 11 offers based primarily on availability. The school also values students who demonstrate their commitment to personal development through a variety of extracurricular activities.
Entrance exam
Students seeking Year 9 enrolment must sit the selective school entry exam in Year 8. For Year 10 or 11 enrolment, students must also sit their exam in the preceding years.

There are two selective entry exams Nossal prospective students will have to sit through, depending on whether they seek enrolment in Year 9 or Years 10 and 11.

Year 9 entry exam components
The exam covers written and mathematical reasoning, verbal and quantitative abilities and writing abilities. Students may also be asked to sit for a discretionary interview.
Year 10/11 entry exam
The Year 10 and 11 exams are held by Nossal using the independent Edutest exam. Students can sit the exam remotely for an additional fee.
Year 10/11 entry exam components
The Edutest exam covers the same range of subjects as the ACER exam. However, students may also be asked to sit for an interview with Nossal’s principal to explain their desire to attend the school.
Nossal High School’s enrolment process and dates
While the exam and interviews are challenging, the actual steps for application are relatively straightforward. Here’s what you need to do.
