If you are preparing for the selective exam, you know that vocabulary is one of the most important things that takes time to learn. It helps you in all of the English components and gives you a much more varied set of tools for the writing piece. Today, let’s look at an effective daily vocabulary routine to help expand your vocabulary.
What’s the daily vocabulary routine?
Obviously, one of the most common ways to improve is to read! Reading novels is of the best ways to improve your vocabulary. But another way you can expand your vocabulary is to write down at least 10-15 synonyms and antonyms of words you already know every day.
How will this help?
By repeating this practice you will come to see improvement in your test results because you will find yourself not repeating the same word in your essays or having to think when a synonym or antonym questions comes up in your test.
Using different words in your essay helps avoid monotone in your writing. Often, writing pieces will become boring for the examiner if they read the same word over and over again. And of course they help enhance your writing so you’ll get easy marks for vocabulary.
In the selective entry exam, many questions will ask you the synonym or antonym of different words you may not know. Practising this technique will make you an expert at answering these questions.
How can I put this into practice?
So, of course you will only see improvement if you write these words regularly and also practice them. Just writing them once does not ensure you know them!
One of the best ways to guarantee you know the words you’ve been practising is to incorporate these words into your essay practice, and to put them to use in your daily speaking life. Sometimes you will also have to just read over them a few times, maybe once or twice everyday.
So just grab a book, make a table, write down many of the boring words you already know and find some synonyms and antonyms of each word.
